The mentally handicapped child from the point of view of the physician of the department of medical assessment services
Elgartová H.

Odbor lékařské posudkové služby Zlín

Summary:

The author reflects on assessing children with mental handicap using her former pediatric qualification. She reminds of diagnostic difficulties and presents beside others the importance of integration for diminishing handicap. The psychological examination required for the assessment might not be unambiguous and the isolated IQ must not be overestimated. The practise shows that approved indicated partial disability usually does not solve the overall situation of the assessed person.

Key words: mental retardation – intelligence – intelligence quotient – deprivation – quality of life – socialization – disability
