Publishing Division CzMA
The Publishing Division CzMA was founded in 1991. The impetus was a poor prosperity of the former publisher of CzMA-owned medical journals, Medical Publishing House AVICENUM (Prague), in the changed economic and political conditions of the early 90s. The aim of the new Division was to provide technical and financial background for the professional development of the individual journals, on one hand, and to build up a modern publishing body competent in editorial services, production and distribution, independent on another legal subject, on the other.
In its early days, the Publishing Division succeeded in combining the positive from both the past and the “future”. It took over the editorial system verified by years of practice in Avicenum, which stressed thorough reviews of manuscripts, as well as a systematic care for medical terminology and language quality. At the same time, the Publishing Division felt free to choose its business partners from the wide range of newly established smaller printing houses promissing an individual attitude towards specialized medical literature and providing still better full-coloured printing. A new system of distribution of one’s own brought an end to year-long conflict with the post-monopolistic distributor PNS, later a new way of export of CzMA journals was introduced via ABONT (Prague), though up to these days the Publishing Division suffers from the confusions caused by the original distributor Artia (Prague) and its successors. The Publishing Division also developed its own large Advertising Department and thus made itself independent on agencies.
In spite of its large-scale activities, which include not only a complex realization of almost thirty periodicals from quarterlies to monthlies, but also an annual publishing of a Catalogue of CzMA Congresses, Conferences, Symposia and Lectures and an occassional digression to book production, the Publishing Division is still a proportionate and flexible body, the aim of which is to grant to both the authors and consumers of the professional medical literature an effective service.
The journals are published, with the exception of one, in Czech and Slovak, with English summaries, and they cover following fields:
The list includes
Praktický lékař (General Practitioner), the most widely read
and subscribed CzMA journal, and Časopis lékařů českých (Journal
of Czech Physicians), a periodical with more than 140 years’ tradition.
