Summary:

Authors present the first information on the introduction of a new rehabilitation and spa method in the Czech Republic. The total body cold therapy (the total body cryotherapy) was first introduced into the common practice in Japan in 1970; it was introduced in Europe in 1985. The Beskydy Rehabilitation Centre Čeladná started to use this method for the first time in our country. Authors list the main indications for using this method, describe the course of the procedure, safety measures, evaluate relative and absolute contraindications and adverse effects. In the conclusion, they inform about the initiation of a longitudinal study, which aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the new method in relation to particular diagnoses and states, which were the indications for the total body cold therapy.

Key words: total body cold therapy, cryotherapy, procedure, liquid air, polarium
