Summary:
The incidence of thrombosis in children is very low compared to the adult population. Very probably most
venous thrombembolic events (VTE) occur in children which have either acquired either inherited prothrombotic
risk. Identifying children with such increased risk of VTE may enable better therapy and in some cases even
prevention of thrombembolic events. Moreover identification of inherited prothrombotic risk factors in child
should lead to family studies and thus prevent serious sequellae of VTE also in other family members. The authors
present an evidence based approach to investigation of child with VTE.
