Dietary iodine deficiency is a problem, recommended by WHO to be resolved worldwide. The Czech Republic and in particular the Ústí region are areas with a grossly inadequate iodine intake. Regular monitoring of iodinuria provides important information of the state of iodine deficiency. 72 gipsy children aged 7 - 12 years (mean 9.06 ± 2.01) received for a period of three months school milk which in half the children was supplemented with iodine, nucleotides, polypeptides and amino acids. Before the scheme and after its termination urine was collected and iodinuria was assessed. After administration a significant increase of iodinuria was found in particular in children who had the supplemented milk. To a smaller extent an increase of iodinuria was recorded also in children of the control group. A rise was observed in particular of the lowest values, while high values of iodinuria decreased to optimal levels. The authors discuss in particular the possible regulating effect of humanized milk. The iodine supply in the CR has a rising trend. In the investigated group no critically reduced level of iodinuria below 100 mg/l urine was found.
