Summary:

Production of the Blood Transfusion Service in 2001 follows trends of previous years. Despite discussions on organization and principal change of control of good manufacture practice (the majority of blood banks had to pass a control of the State Drug Control Institute according to new law) the organization and structure of the blood transfusion service remains the same. The great majority of collections is performed in not very big centres and locally processed, only 7.2 % of collections are sent for processing to an other centre. The donor population is stable but lower than recommended (36.7 donors per 1000 inhab.). The great majority of donations is without remuneration (97.5% of whole blood collections). The number of collections is stable (40 donations per 1000 inhab.). Number of plasmaphereses increased to 49 thds. after the drop last year. The number of platelet collections is stable, some blood banks introduced multicomponent collections and /or erythrocytapheresis. Production shifts to products with lower leukocyte contamination. The proportion of plasma used in clinics is relatively high (14 units per 1000 inhab.). The number of donors with positive markers of infection is steadily decliing, probably due to better instructions of donors. Prevalence of HIV+ remains very low.
