Summary:

       The incidence of congenital syphilis has increased in the last years. It is a completely preventable disease whose clinical spectrum ranges from asymptomatic infection, to fulminant sepsis, incl. death. Factors related to increased incidence, problems in serodiagnosis, manifestation of the early versus late forms of the disease and recommendation for evaluation and treatment are illustrated by two case-reports and are discussed. The potentially devasting effect of congenital syphilis on the foetus also paralelly influencing unfavourable the pregnancy of the mother make syphilis a major medical and public health problem even today.
