Dermatomyositis is relatively rare inflammatory myopathy affecting both children and adults. Knowledge of its characteristic skin manifestations is particularly important to dermatologists, because they can precede the onset of muscle weakness. This review summarizes classification of dermatomyositis, diagnostic criteria, disease pathogenesis, clinical and histopathological findings as well as current therapeutical recommendations.
