Summary:

The authors present an account on the anatomy, embryonic development and physiology of the external auditory meatus.Theyemphasize inparticular the influence of embryonic development on the migration activity of the ear drum and adjacent osseous parts of the external auditory meatus. The migration activity plays an important part in the self-cleasing ability of the external auditory meatus. The development of the external auditory meatus and tympanic membrane are demonstrated on the authors’ own histological pictures. In the second part the authors present possible developmental malformations of the external auditory meatus, stenoses, atresias and a double auditory meatus. For successful surgical reconstruction of the external auditory meatus the presence of the deep portion of the osseous auditory meatus with an intact migration activity is important.

Key words: external auditory meatus, anatomy, embryology, physiology, developmental defects, atresia, stenosis.
