Summary:
Objective: Analysis of quarterly incidences of selected types of birth defects in the Czech Republic during
1994 - 2001.
Type of study: Retrospective analysis of quarterly data from the records of birth defects in the Czech Republic.
Method: Processing and analysis of the incidences of selected birth defects in the Czech Republic in relative
figures (per 10 000 liveborn). The ratio of observed/expected values was calculated for different selected birth
defects.
Results: During the period from Jan. 1. 1994 to Dec. 31, 2001 in the CR a total of 745 410 (preliminary data)
liveborn infants were born. This number included 21 086 children with one or several birth defects. The mean
incidence of all cases during the follow up period was 287.58 per 10 000 liveborn. The authors analyze also in detail
the frequencies and their changes in eleven selected types of birth defects.
Conclusion: Current recording and analyses of the incidence of birth defects are essential as the basis for
evaluation of the influence of the mentioned factors on the incidence of birth defects.
