Oxygen is needed in the wound not ohly as a substrate to provide free energy but also as a substrate to ensure collagen synthesis. In tase of oxygen deficiency in the collagen molekule transverse bonds are formed which reduce the resistance to traction in the wound.
Promotion of oxygenation of the organism is thus verv important.
