Summary:

The authors analyze accidental drug intoxications in children, who were hospitalized for this diagnosis at the 1st and 2nd Children's Clinics ofLF UKand Children's Clinic of Anesthesiology and Intensive Medicine (DKAIM) of Children's Faculty Hospital with Policlinic in Bratislava in the period of 1996 - 2000. The analyzed cohort (43.7% of all drug intoxications) included 129 child patients up to 6 years of age. Two-year children constituted the most frequent group. Flunitrazepam was the most frequent drug in accidental intoxications and the most frequent pharmacological group was that of analgesic drugs - antipyretic and antirheumatic ones. Accidental intoxication with paracetamol and ibuprofen formed a large group of intoxications. Children from the observed group consumed the preparations most frequently in a solid drug form (87.1%), color drug forms (56.1%) and preparations wrapped in blister packs (66.4%) prevailed. In the analyzed cohort there were 13 cases of serious intoxications and one case of heavy intoxication. Serious and heavy intoxications were most frequently encountered after flunitrazepam.
