Summary:

A rectovaginal fistula is a communication between the anterior wall of the anal channel or rectum and the posterior wall of the vagina. A rectovaginal fistula is regarded as low if the repair can be done from a perineal approach and high if it can only be repaired transabdominally. Midrectovaginal fistulas are located between the two. Rectovaginal fistulas comprise less than 5 percent of anorectal fistulas. Most result from perineal injury during childbirth. Other forms of trauma (operative, blunt and penetrating injuries and foreign body), Crohn’s disease, carcinoma, radiation therapy, and other causes may be found. Passage of flatus and sometimes feces through the vagina is unmistakable to the patients. Repair techniques are succesful without the need for a preliminary colostomy in uncomplicated cases. Authors describe the case of a women with rectovaginal fistula caused by foreign body.

Key words: rectovaginal fistula, chicken bone
