Summary:

Sepsis is characterized as complex activation of the host immune system during infection. The severity of sepsis is closely related to microbe - host interactions. The polymorphism of genes encoding specific proteins in host cells that mediate host -microbe interactions plays an important role in elimination of the infectious agens and can lead to either mild or severe sepsis. In this presentation the general view of sepsis including recent recommendation to its evaluation is presented. Brief characteristics of proteins involved directly or indirectly in initiation of sepsis are mentioned.

        Key words: sepsis, children, proteins
