Prenatal Diagnosis of Inborn Devects - Detection of Foetal Cells in the Maternal Circulation with Subsequent Genetic Analysis

Summary:

       Objective: To summarize the findings regarding the possibility of prenatal diagnosis on the basis of isolation and examination of fetal cells and fetal DNA in the maternal circulation. Type of Study: Review. Setting: The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, 1st Faculty of Medicine, Charles University and the General Faculty Hospital, Apolinářská 18, 128 51 Prague 2, Czech Republic. Methods: Analysis of literature. Results: An overview of the presently used noninvasive methods of prenatal diagnosis based on the isolation and examination of fetal cells in the maternal circulation. A new method, the analysis of free/unbound fetal DNA in the maternal plasma and serum enables more accurate DNA diagnosis than DNA acquired from fetal cells. Conclusion: Several methods mentioned are as yet experimental, and have not been used in clinical practice.
