Summary:

Basic biochemical and cytological examination, as well as evaluation of cerebrospinal fluid proteins, involving levels of immunoglobulins, inflammatory reactants, markers of compression, markers of tissue destruction, complement compounds and proteinase inhibitors was performed on 55 samples of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in patients with multiple sclerosis. The most frequent elevation concerning CSF proteins levels, was observed in immunoglobulins (73%) with intrathecal synthesis, according to Reiber’s formula, in 66%, and in general inflammatory markers (62%). CSF pleocytosis was observed in 46%, but the qualitative cytological investigation r evealed pathological findings in almost 93% of samples.

Key words: multiple sclerosis, CSF protein fractions, cytology of cerebrospinal fluid.
