Summary:
Malignant melanoma is an aggressive skin tumour the incidence of which is rising worldwide. The authors draw attention to the rising incidence in the Žilina region and districts of Ilava, Považská Bystrica and Púchov, based on data for 1997 - 1999.
The authors diagnosed during the period from 1997 - 1999 136 new cases of malignant melanoma. Malignant melanomas were diagnosed in 67 women, mean age 54 years, and in 69 men mean age 58 years. The most frequently diagnosed histopathological type was LMM (44 %), followed by SSM (28 %) and the most frequent localization in men (62 %) and women (37 %) was the trunk.
In the conclusion the authors evaluate the rising incidence of malignant melanoma in northern Slovakia in 1999 by more than 100 % as compared with 1997.
