Summary:

Of 22 children with hemiparetic cerebral palsy 19 were born pre-term, the other 3 after the 37th week of gestation. All patients underwentMRI as an adjunct toCT, which was part of the previous follow up. In the pre-term born children on cranial MRI paraventricular white matter lesions in T2 weighted and FLAIR images contrasted with normal white matter of children born in term. CT did not demonstrate any change of white matter. MR imaging as a diagnostic tool in cerebral palsy seems to be a new source of information and an important marker of the degree of white matter brain damage. The results of MR examination support the hypothesis, that pre-term and in-term born patients with diparetic cerebral palsy form two different clinical entities.
