Summary:
This review presents basic data regarding evolution, synthesis, structure and propert ies of fibrinogen. Impor-
tance of fibrinogen in the haemostatic system is emphasised. Relationship between structure of fibrinogen and
its physiological function is discussed in detail. Function of flexible domains, their significance for exactly
organised polymerisation is demonstrated. The significance of FPA(B) cleavage and its influence upon the
structure and properties of the fibrinogen molecule is shown. Alternative steps in fibrin formation (as response
of fibrinogen to the changes in its surroundings) are outlined. The antigenic potentia l of fibrinogen molecule
and its main domains are also discussed.
Key words:
fibrinogen, fibrin, FBG, FBN, FDP, haemostasis.
