Summary:

A series of 3049 cases of paraproteinaemias has been analysed during 35 years. Immunoelectrophoresis was used for a characterization of monoclonal immunoglobulins in a series of 2474 paraproteins.Within the last five years, 575 paraproteins have been detected using immunofixation electrophoresis. Both series of paraproteins were compared and significantly higher frequency of double paraproteinaemias in the series of 575 paraproteins, 5.9%versus 1.8%, was confirmed. The immunofixation reveals that multiple paraproteinaemias are more frequent that has been assumed. This article, some problems of electrophoresis and immunofixation electrophoresis for detection of monoclonal immunoglobulins are also discussed.

Key words: monoclonal immunoglobulin, paraprotein, immunofixation, M-gradient, biclonal gammopathy.
