Quality of Life and its Importance in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry

Summary:

       The authors submit the concept of quality of the life of a child with a mental disorder. The multidimensional concept of quality of life includes subjective wellbeing as the emotional component, satisfaction in different spheres of life as the cognitive component, and functioning in social roles as the performance component. The quality of life related to the health status is focused on the subjective evaluation of the somatic, mental, social and functional aspect of the child’s health status. The authors discuss psychopathological, therapeutic, personal, social and ecological factors of the quality of life. The concept of quality of life in child and adolescent mental disorders can be perspectively used as a criterium of therapeutic decision taking, planning of clinical care of patients also when evaluating the effectiveness of a certain type of treatment with special importance in chronic diseases.
