Summary:

Objective: To report about results of control examination and assessment of quality of life after laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair. Material and Methods: The questionnaire was sent to 542 patients operated on in the time from August 1993 to the end of October 2003 and they were asked to come to control examination. Personally nearly 44% of patients were reviewed, nearly 20% of patients sent only the questionnaire, 0,55% of patients died from another reasons, in 1,85% cases the address was not valid. This way about 66% of operated patients were reviewed. Results: Interesting results were found in the length of work off period and in the interval from the operation to full physical activity. Both intervals were longer as expected. The influencing factors are discussed. Up to 90% of patients were satisfied with the operation and in the case of necessity they should underwent this type of surgery again. Recurrence was seen in 3,7%. The reasons of recurrences and additional factors are discussed, as well. Conclusion: Laparoscopic herniorrhaphy became standard procedure in the surgical treatment of inguinal hernia. From our experience point of view it offers to the patients sufficient comfort. For motivated patients it represents shorter work off time and shorter interval to full physical activity, as well. Recurrence rate in presented group is acceptable. The economic aspect of these operations remains a problem in Slovakia. The situation in the Czech Republic is quite different.
