Summary:

The authors present their initial experiences with gut preparation forgoing virtual colonoscopy. This relatively new imaging method places emphasis on an accurate bowel cleansing, even higher than in conventional colonoscopy. Two methods of gut preparation were used in our follow-up file of 34 patients: application of polyethylene glycol or sodium phosphate. The bowel cleansing was much better after application of polyethylene glycol solution and so did the virtual CT colonoscopy imaging. On the other hand sodium phosphate solutions were better tolerated by patients. These findings correspond with experiences gained in conventional colonoscopy.

Key words: virtual CT colonoscopy, gut preparation, polyethylene glycol, sodium phosphate
