Based on an analysis of hospital records the authors submit a review of a group of 75 patients admitted in 1999 for treatment of acquired syphilis. The group comprises 48 (64 %) women and 27 (36 %) men. Forty women (83.3 %) and 22 (81.5 %) men were Czech citizens. The remainder were foreigners, urostly from territories of the former Soviet Union. In 39 (81.2 %) women syphilis secundaria latens was diagnosed, six women suffered from syphilis secundaria recens, three women from syphilis primaria. In the group of men most frequently syphilis II latens was diagnosed - in a total of nine (33.3 %) cases, followed by syphilis I and syphilis II recens, both diagnoses included seven cases each (25.9 %). Other characteristics were also recorded such as age, family status, clinical symptoms of syphilis and other STD, treatment, period of hospitalization etc. The assembled data are compared with nationvide statistical data.
