Pharmacological Therapy of Juvenile Bipolar Disorder
Drtílková I.

Psychiatrická klinika LF MU a FN, Brno, přednostka prof. MUDr. E. Češková, CSc.

Summary:

The presentation of bipolar disorder in the youth, especially in children, is often considered atypical compared with the classic adult disorder which is characterized by distinct phases of mania and depression. Children with established diagnosis of bipolar disorder in community settings typically present with rapid fluctuation in mood and behavior, often associated with comorbid ADHD and disruptive behavior disorders. Mood stabilizers and atypical antipsychotic agents are generally the first line of treatment. Although the patients may respond to monotherapy, combination pharmacotherapy is necessary for some youth.

Key words: bipolar disorder, children, adolescents, treatment.
