Isolated Lesions of the Sphenoidal Sinus
Andrašovská M., Zborayová K., Mudrák J., Kovaľ J.

Klinika ORL a foniatrie FNsP a LF UPJŠ, Košice, prednosta doc. MUDr. J. Kovaľ, CSc.

Summary:

The authors present 10 patients with an isolated lesion of the sphenoidal sinus who were diagnosed and treated at their clinic during the last eight years. This represents 0.4% of all patients examined in the rhinologiccal out-patient department. In nine instances isolated sphenoiditis was involved (cysts 3 times, mucocele twice, pyocele 3 times, aspergillus sphenoiditis once) and in one instance a chondrosarcoma. CT examination was of crucial importance for assessment of the diagnosis. In two instances by rhinendoscopy pathological changes significant for a lesion in the sphenoidal sinus were detected. In the symptomatology headache predominates. The lesions were treated by rhinendoscopic surgical technique. The authors emphasize the importance of imaging examinations in all cases of headache of an apparently obscure etiology and the importance of rhinendoscopic surgery in treatment.

Key words: sphenoiditis, rhinendoscopic surgerx, CT PND.
