Psychiatric Problems in the Internal Praxis. Part II.
Češková E.

Psychiatrická klinika LF MU a FN, Brno-Bohunice

Summary:

The second generation of antipsychotic drugs (= atypical antipsychotics) have several advantages namely their low affinity to the extrapyramidal system. However, the administration of these drugs may bring about some side effects, which are particularly significant for the internal praxis. They include the weight gain and related impairment of the lipid and glucose metabolism. Some atypical antipsychotics can cause prolongation of the QT interval with all possible consequences.

Key words: antipsychotics, extrapyramidal system, body mass, obesity, dopamine, diabetes mellitus, QT interval, ventricular tachycardia.
