Summary:

The recent neuropsychological research has emphasized memory defi cit as one of a key area of impairment in schizophrenia. Evidence is accumulating that these impairments are predominantly related to abnormalities in the prefrontal cortex and mediotemporal structures of the brain. Some authors consider the memory dysfunction as a selective defi cit in patients with schizophrenia. Cognitive impairments, particularly information processing and working memory have proven to be strongest predictors of overall social functioning and quality of life of patients with schizophrenia.

Key words: schizophrenia, memory impairment, working memory, learning.
