Summary:

There were 206 children (range 1.5–17 years, average 4.7) implanted in Cochlear Implant Center – ENT department, Charles University, 2nd Medical School, Prague, from the year 1993. We did not observe any major surgical complicatinos (paresis of the facial nerve, haemorrhage, severe flap infection) – neither “postoperative” (up to 24 hours), nor “early” (up to one week). From minor surgical complications (eardrum perforation, haematoma, flap swelling, mild flap infection, temporary facial weakness) up to 24 hours we were solving once one hour lasting cheek weakness caused by persisting local anaesthesia and once small wound dehiscence which was healed during one week with conservative treatment. There were – up to one week – no more problems in this set.We think this results ensued from a close cooperation with Prof. Dr. Dr. Ernst Lehnhardt and taking his experience from more than 600 implantations.

Key words: cochlear implants, children, surgical complications, postoperative complications.
