Problems of Men Hospitalized on Account of Eating Disorders

Summary:

       unit of the Psychiatric Clinic of Charles University in 1983–2001. There were 8 patients (44%) suffering from bulimia nervosa, 7 patients (38%) from anorexia nervosa, 2 patients (11%) suffered from both previous diagnoses (anorexia and bulimia), and 1 patient was treated for psychogenic dysphagie (6%). Beside dieting, the primary strategy to reduce the weight was excessive physical activity Seven patients reported engaging in a variety of types of sports – long distance running, cycling, ice hockey and body building. For some subjects excersice become a coping strategy to reduce anxiety and tension. Two subjects prefered to perform heavy manual work as a method of weight control. The paper contains two case-reports of one patient with anorexia nervosa and one patient with bulimia nervosa.
