Summary:
The authors submit the results of examinations of selected parameters of lipid metabolism in a group of
13-year-old children of diabetic mothers (n = 31) as compared with a control group (n = 76) formed by children
without the genetic burden of diabetes.
As to biochemical parameters, they examined serum cholesterol levels and the distribution into cholesterol
fractions - LDL and HDL, the concentration of serum triacylglycerols, lipoprotein „singking pre-beta1“ and
apolipoproteins A1 and B. From the assessed values they calculated the atherogenic indexes and the ApoB/ApoA1
quotient. Children of diabetic mothers had significantly higher levels of triacylglycerols, ApoB and higher values
of all risk indexes, a more frequent incidence of pre-beta1 a lower concentration of HDL cholesterol and ApoA1.
As the indicators of somatic development these children had a significantly higher body mass index (BMI). In the
investigated parameters no significant sexual differences were found.
The assembled results indicate the need of regular follow-up of the lipid profile in children of diabetic mothers.
