Summary: Objective: The purpose of this study was to correlate the embolization effectiveness of
bone lesions with the patient’s prognosis and with the blood loss during surgery.
Materials and methods: Arterial embolization was performed in 32 patients (57 interventions)
with bone tumors. Thirty-four procedures were preoperative and twentythree
were palliative. Three patients had benign lesions (hemangioma), twenty-nine
had malignant lesions. The most common lesions were renal cell carcinoma metastases
– 75 % of all patients.
Results: Obliteration of more than 75 % of tumor mass was assessed as successful. The
embolization was successful in 91 % of preoperative cases and in 62 % cases with palliative
interventions. Complications were seen in 5,3 % with this therapeutic approach.
Eight patients (35 %) required the blood transfusion during surgery.
Conclusion: Successful preoperative embolization of bone tumors have reduced intraoperative
blood loss. Palliative embolization may improve the quality of life, mainly
due to pain release. Survival of embolized and surgically treated patients was not statistically
different in comparison to palliatively embolized patients.
