The author reviews the current literature dealing with the use of colour Doppler sonography and spectral Doppler analysis in the diagnostics of pathological processes of the gastrointestinal tract, with emphasis on ischaemic and inflammatory diseases, including acute appendicitis. On the basis of reported findings the author outlines possible indications for the incorporation of the method into the diagnostic algorithm, with emphasis on everyday routine.
