Summary:
The authors present survey of endocrine-active adrenal tumors and the role of imaging
methods in the diagnosis. Having briefly dealt with anatomy and physiology of
adrenals the authors describe most important clinical syndromes associated with
endocrine-active adrenal tumors: hypercortisolism (Cushing syndrome), hyperaldosteronism,
pheochromocytoma and incidentaloma.
The contribution of individual imaging methods is then described. Their position in
the diagnosis of extra-adrenal causes of hormonal adrenal functions is briefly mentioned.
Their possibilities in endocrine-active adrenal tumors are analyzed in more
detail. Ultrasonography, CT and MR are used most frequently, and CT examination
has been the most frequent modality in this country. The possibilities of functional
scintigraphy of adrenals, angiography and intervention radiological methods are also
outlined. In the diagnosis of endocrine-active adrenal tumors the imaging methods
always follow after clinical and laboratory examination of the patients.
