Summary:
Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis is a chronic inflammation of the brain with a long incubation
period, caused by a persistent incomplete measles virus. The disease affects in particular the child
population. The maximum incidence was described in the fifties and sixties of last century. Since then,
obviously due to preventive immunization against measles, it occurs only sporadically. The disease has
a typical clinical course and poor prognosis with limited therapeutic possibilities among which intrathecal
or intraventricular administration of interferon alpha seems relatively promising. The authors
present in the form of a case-record their own experience with the clinical course of the disease,
contemporary diagnostic possibilities and therapeutic procedures.
Key words:
subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE), measles virus, isoprinosine, interferon alpha
