The authors summarize hitherto assembled knowledge on the manifestation of latent infections with the Varicella Zoster virus. The paper presents some more recent views not only on the pathophysiology but also on diagnostic methods and possible therapeutic strategies. Based on their own group of patients the authors draw attention to difficulties associoated with assessment of the correct diagnosis. They discuss the results with those from other groups and pay detailed attention to affections of hearing and prognostic prerequisities for its restoration.
