Summary:
The article describes a newly introduced technique in the
Czech Republic and our first experiences with it. The
evaluation of the changes in bronchial wall or in the
outside in the vicinity of the airways can only be suspected
from indirect signs. Many pathologies however include
parabronchial structures and are not diagnosed by classic
bronchoscopy at all. EBUS (endobronchial ultrasound)
is the method, which is able to remove this
shortcoming and enable a new picture of the structures
adjacent to bronchial wall. In the viewof patient’s fate the
most important fact is the ability of EBUS to correctly
diagnose lymphatic node involvement in clinical staging
of bronchogenic carcinoma. The indication and methodology
is discussed.
Key words:
endobronchial ultrasound, transbronchial
biopsy, bronchogenic carcinoma
