Summary:

The authors evaluate a group of 21 patients with antrochoanal polyps. These patients accounted for 7 % in a group of all patients with nasal polyps. The mean age of the group with antrochoanal polyps was 28 years. Six patients reported allergies in their case-history. Subjective complaints lasted on average six months. A typical symptom was deterioration of nasal patency. In two patients the polyps were bilateral, in another two patients there were multiple polyps. The authors suggest as a more pertinent term for nasal polyps, originating only in the maxillary sinus, antronasal polyps. On CT examination the authors found in all patients occlusion of one maxillary sinus. In ten patients also other paranasal sinuses were affected, most frequently contralateral maxillary sinuses. Histological examination revealed in 18 polyps, i.e. in 90%, squamous metaplasia of the epithelium, in 17 polyps tissue eosinophilia. In the group of patients with antrochoanal polyps the authors draw attention to some common signs of these polyps and inverted papilloma of the lateral nasal wall.

Key words: nasal polyps, antrochoanal polyps.
