Summary:
The project of BNCT was started in the Czech Republic after prolonged preparations in September
2000. A multidisciplinary group of specialists worked out the clinical protocol according to which 7
patients were included in the study. Only 5 of them were irradiated since one was found out from
histology specimen not to harbour GBMand the other one did not have sufficient concentrations of the
BSH compound in the tumour. The BNCT protocol sets strict criteria as to preoperative and postoperative
inclusion of the patients and its part is BNCT information sheet and Informed consent sheet.
Number of irradiated patients, lenght of follow-up and the radiation dose do not enable us to draw any
substantial conclusions so far. On top of it radiation dose is still on the 75% of the calculated safe dose
in our first 5 patients and thus curative effect is not to be expected.Nevertheless no side effects in terms
of BSH application or radiation procedure have been observed and we suppose that further dose
escalation towards therapeutic levels can be done.
Key words:
boron neutron therapy, preoperative and postoperative inclusion and exclusion criteria,
BSH application, surgical procedure, radiotherapy, follow-up
