The authors describe the principles of the masking of the contralateral ear in examinations of the hearing threshold. They explain the basic terms, which are important in threshold audiometry. They attempt a simple and logically based procedure when selecting the correct level of masking. They draw attention to situations when it is difficult to assess the threshold or when it is impossible.
