Summary:
The authors describe a group of 16 patients examined within the interval of February 1998 and
January 2000 where perforation of the digestive tract was proved by imaging methods. According
to the site of perforation one occurred in the hypopharynx, 7 in the oesophagus, one in the stomach,
3 in the small intestine and 3 in the large intestine. In one instance perforation by a foreign body
was involved, in one by a stent, one by caustic action.
Four times dehiscence of an anastomosis or fistula after surgery was involved. Seven cases of
perforation were spontaneous. In 6 instances (40%) for assessment of the diagnosis of perforation
a simple X-ray in an upright position with evidence of pneumoperitoneum, pneumomediastinum or
subcutaneous emphysema was sufficient. In 8 instances the authors proved by examination with
iodine contrast substance the penetration of contrast substance beyond the lumen of the digestive
tract. On CT perforation was proved in two patients. In 6 instances CT examination provided more
accurate findings on the extent of changes or grade of recovery.
