Differences between Supratentorial MR Foci in the Brain
of Patiens with Neuropsychiatric Lupus and Multiple Sclerosis

Summary:
The authors compared MR findings in 60 patients with a verified diagnosis of neuropsychiatric lupus
and in 60 patients with a definite diagnosis of multiple sclerosis in correlation with healthy controls.
Assessment of differences, which are specific for each clinical unit in MR imaging was the aim of the
work. It was verified, that pathological findings of T2 weighted hyperintensities in both clinical units
differred statistically significantly in the supratentorial distribution, either in the average of the total
amount of supratentorial lesions or in the average number of lesions in individual cerebral lobes.There
were no differences in the predominant distribution in frontal and parietal lobes among the two groups
of patients. The total frequency of lesions was highest in multiple sclerosis patients, the shape of the
lesions was predominantly ovoid. Both groups of patients differred statistically significantly in the
average number of lesions in comparison with the group of healthy persons.
