Summary:
The history of clinical biochemistry in the Czech Republic is a history of searching for the identity of the
discipline. The success of the discipline needs a clear and definite position of clinical biochemistry in health care,
with a scientific background and clinical application. To this end the system of postgraduate education has to
be changed. It must clearly define the required knowledge and abilities without any doubts. In the medical
category the priority depends on the consensus of the orientation of physicians-clinical biochemists (more
clinical practice or more laboratory medicine) and according that in the educational system. Scientists enter our
discipline from very different pregraduate educational systems and their post-graduate education includes only
little part of clinical education. The definite goal for all categories is to adjust the educational system to the
system in the EU to open the possibility for joining the European Register of Clinical Chemists.
