Summary:

The objective of the study was to examine and evaluate the condition of the dentition andsoft tissuesof the oral cavity inalcoholaddictsin theCzechRepublic. In 2001 100 subjects were examined aged 21-61 years, mean age was 41.17 years. The results were compared to a corresponding group of alcohol addicts in Great Britain. It was found that the oral health is comparable in the two groups. Only the incidence of pathological changes on the mucosal membranes was less frequ- ent in Czech patients. The mean DMFT value in the Czech group was 16.31. The number of teeth with non-treated caries was 3.16 per subject. The value of the restorative index was 72.2 %. Oral hygiene had a low standard. Only 3.0 % of subjects had teeth without plaque and in 67.7 % plaque extending over one third of the crown was found. Only 3.0 % of subjects had a sound periodontium. Shallow or deep periodontal pockets were found in 52.0 % of subjects. Findings in the oral cavity provide information on the general health status and thus can help to establish an early diagnosis in alcohol addicts and facilitate and optimalize subsequent treatment.

Key words: alcohol addiction - caries experience - oral hygiene - periodontal health
