Can MRI Bring New Information in the Diagnostics of Neurodegenerative CNS Disease?
Seidl Z., Vaněčková M.

Oddělení MR, Radiodiagnostická klinika 1. LF a VFN, Praha přednosta doc. MUDr. J. Daneš, CSc.

Summary:

The authors investigated a cohort of 300 patients out of our large archive of patients with diagnosis of some specific neurodegenerative disease or just with suspicion for degenerative disease of CNS. For most of them the original interpretation of MR images was limited just to description of brain atrophy or ischemic changes in the white brain matter. Now, under “reinspection” of MR images, often in cases where the final diagnosis was found on the basis of several clinical and paraclinical testing, the authors detected specific attributes in these images that can be very important for future clinical diagnostic, especially in its early stage. Also modification of MR protocol is beneficial, when suspicion about neurodegenerative disease is existing, thinner slices (THK 3.0/0.3 mm) in infratentorial region should be used in particular. On the other hand, the authors can conclude that practically none of these attributes in MR image is patognomonic. In this study the authors choose only some diseases where the newly observed findings are important in their view.

Key words: degenerative extrapyramidal syndromes – CNS – magnetic resonance imaging – dementia
