Summary: The aim of our reports is to assess the feasibility and our first experience of central
venous port-catheters implantation in a radiology suite.
Material and methods: During the interval of 13 months (Nov 2003 to Nov 2004) authors
implanted 60 portcatheters in 58 patients. 57 patients obtained central venous ports,
three patients have intraarterial transfemoral portcatheter and two patients have
implanted both systems. Authors used 6F port-catheters in all cases. For the central
venous access they punctured v. subclavia from the supraclavicular approach in all
but one patients.
Results: The technical success rate was 100%. Once pneumothorax occurred and was
treated by drainage needed hospitalisation. Rotation of port-catheter chamber occurred
in one patient was treated by reposition in our department.
Conclusion: Central venous port-catheter implantation in hands of interventional
radiologist is a safe procedure. Use of fluoroscopy can make the procedure even safer
and minimalize the risk of periprocedural complications.
