Summary:

Purpose: Retrospective review of the results of catheter therapy of kidney postbiopsy complications. Material and methods: Within the last 15 years fifteen patients with complications connected to kidney biopsy were treated in our department. The group consisted of 8 females, 7 males (11 native kidneys, 4 transplanted kidneys). The average age was 37.5 (9–74) years. Thirteen patients were referred for bleeding (persisting hematuria, perirenal hematoma); one patient developed an AV shunt in transplanted kidney causing its function impairment due to steal phenomena and in one patient hemodynamically significant shunt developed in the native kidney years after biopsy resulting in LV overload. All patients were treated by (super)-selective embolization, 14 of them performed by metal coils, one of them using detachable balloon. Results: All 15 procedures were technically successful (two of them had to be repeated due to incomplete occlusion from first embolization), and authors were able to eliminate the source of bleeding in all 13 cases and to occlude hemodynamically significant shunt in the two remaining cases. No major complication occurred. Conclusion: Selective embolization proved to be safe and efficient method in kidney postbiopsy complications treatment.
