Summary:
Vacuum breast biopsy by Mammotome has become an important tool of modern mammological
diagnostics especially in female patients with minute lesions of the breast. In comparison with the
generally used core cut biopsy it presents various advantages. In particular, it is the greater size of
the obtained samples and a possibility to take more samples from one puncture without the need to
withdraw the needle from the patient’s body, possible sucking of blood during the intervention and
consequently prevention of hematoma development. Moreover, female patients with palpable
lesions in the breast may profit from the method, since it provides the possibility to simultaneously
take sample for histological examination as well diminution or complete removal of the lesion. The
disadvantage of the method, in comparison with the core cut biopsy, is a higher price of the used
material and a longer time required for the intervention. It is therefore performed only in several
centers, specialized for mammography diagnostics.
