Summary:

The authors analyze most frequent diseases of mammary gland in men and their sonography and mammography images. Most of determined mammary lesions in men are benign in nature, genycomasty being the most frequent pathological unit. Some often-encountered diseases in women (e.g., fibroadenomas) do not occur in the malemamma.Male breast cancer is relatively rare – it represents about 1% all breast cancers and is the cause of death in only 0.1% of those who died for cancer of various types. The imaging methods for the diagnosis of these diseases are identical as those in affection of breast in women. They supplement each other and must be used in relation and relevant algorithm, especially in view of the economy of the diagnostic process.Mammography examinations of the male breast represent less than 1% of the mammography examinations performed. The most frequent symptoms, resulting in the decision of mammography include enlargement of breast, palpable lesion, changes in the area of the nipple and case history of breast cancer. The yield of the examination is 90%. Sensitivity of sonography examination is 96–97%, similar to women. It is useful for differentiation of cystic and solid lesion, malignant and benign nodule. It is themethod of choice in young men, e.g., in adolescents, where the rate of so called puberty gynecomasty is relatively frequent. The advantage is the possibility of puncture – biopsy with a simultaneous evaluation of the position of puncture needle.

Key words: male breast – mammography – sonography – gynecomasty – carcinoma
