Carotid endarterectomy (CEA) is one of the most commonly performed vascular surgeries worldwide. Doppler scanning is a supplemental method for verification of CEA results, a simple method to verify the patency of the operated artery right after CEA was performed. We have used a pencil 4-MHz CW probe with a sterile cover, the measurement was performed on exposed arteries of the carotid bifurcation before and after CEA. Measurements were performed in 312 CEAs in 251 patients. In 5 cases, a stenosis > 70 % was found after the CEA. In two out of the five cases, angiography did not demonstrate stenosis, in two cases, a revision of the endarterectomy was required, in one case, the stenosis was treated with delayed end-to-end anastomosis with a venous graft sectioning the whole artery in the location of the original CEA.
